Geneseo vs. Neumann Weekend Recap

Geneseo splits weekend series with Neumann.

By Nate Lull

The Geneseo Ice Knights entered into the second weekend of their season with a tough pair of games at home against the Neumann Knights. Neumann, an up and coming team within the Division III hockey ranks, gave Geneseo all they could handle throughout the two game set. Neumann took the Friday night game 6-2, while Geneseo returned strong on Saturday posting a 5-3 victory.

Last season, the Ice Knights traveled to Neumann early in the season and swept a pair of close games. Both contests were tough and Geneseo was one of the first teams in the country to discover Neumann’s increased ability. It wasn’t long until other teams ran into this surprising Neumann team as well - as the Knights fell only three points shy of making the playoffs in the tough ECAC West. Many wondered if the success would be duplicated this season for Neumann and so far it has against two SUNYAC opponents. The Knights swept their opening series at Potsdam and continued their success last Friday against Geneseo.

Freshmen goaltender Greg Richardson got the nod from Geneseo Head Coach Chris Schultz for the Friday night start in net. Richardson was faced with the tough task of stopping a talented Neumann line-up that seemed to be firing on all cylinders. Neumann wasted no-time as they used an early power play opportunity to get on the board with a goal by Kyle Casey from the slot. Erik Stoyanvich followed that up by putting in the second goal of the night for Neumann on the power play 4 minutes later. This gave Neumann a quick 2-0 lead and put Geneseo on its heels. The Ice Knights regrouped and managed to hold off Neumann until the 16:57 mark when Neil Trimm put in the game winner, this time with a 4-on-3 advantage for Neumann, putting the Knights up 3-0 after the first period.

Neumann continued to find the back of the net in the second period as Matt Ward scored on a rebound out in front. This would do it for Richardson as Schultz elected to go with Derek Jokic the rest of the way. It was a tough start for Richardson, as he was forced to face a talented Neumann team in his first college appearance. Despite the tough outing, Richardson did make several quality stops, including a fantastic glove save on the third shot of the game from Neumann’s Kyle Casey. With one start under his belt and the early jitters gone, I believe Richardson will improve in his next outing.

With Jokic in net, Geneseo seemed to get a kick of energy. Tyson Terry got the Ice Knights on the board as he was assisted by Mitch Stephens and Mike MacDonald at the 17:08 mark on the power play. But all the momentum seemed to melt away as Neumann’s Mike Hedden scored on a 5-on-3 chance with four seconds left in the period. This gave Neumann a 5-1 lead going into the third period.

As the third period began, Geneseo refused to quit. The Ice Knights skated hard and were rewarded when Sebastian Panetta scored on the power play from Stephens and Mathieu Cyr at 7:14. This made it 5-2 and Geneseo looked to have some life left in them. But Neumann goaltender Mike Collichio ended any thoughts of a Geneseo comeback as he made several key saves down the stretch. Collichio looked strong all night on Friday and is really the backbone of the Neumann team. Neumann put the game away for good when Kyle Casey netted his second of the night making the final score 6-2.

Overall, Neumann worked and skated extremely hard on Friday night and came away with a solid win. Geneseo looked stronger as the game went along, as the tried to recover from a poor first period. The team seemed to rally around Derek Jokic when he entered the game and played much better after that point. Neumann wanted the sweep and Geneseo wanted revenge, so this set the stage for the second showdown in as many days between the two teams.

Geneseo takes game two, 5-3

The stakes were high for both teams coming into the Saturday match-up between Geneseo and Neumann. Geneseo wanted to avoid the sweep at home and with a win perhaps Neumann could crack the national USCHO rankings for Division III.

Neumann got right back to work as Neil Trimm fired a slapper past Derek Jokic less than a minute into the game. This would be the only offense for the first period as Geneseo couldn’t find an answer for Mike Collichio. Despite getting one early shot past Jokic, Neumann couldn’t seem to find the holes as Jokic looked strong the rest of the period.

Geneseo used a power play that carried over from the first period to get on the board first only thirty seconds into the second as Casey Balog netted his first of the year. Mathieu Cyr followed that up by slipping another one past Collichio at the 6:32 mark. This gave Geneseo a 2-1 lead and it appeared that they had finally figured out how to beat Collichio.

Any momentum built by the 2-1 lead was quickly erased though as Jesse Cole scored off the ensuing face-off for Neumann, putting it back to 2-2. It would stay this way for the rest of the period and the teams would decide the game in the third period.

Such a close contest brought the physical side out for both teams. The game was full of penalties, ten for Neumann and eight for Geneseo. Neumann sealed their fate midway through the period when after an initial penalty was called Forward Dayne Bihn sent a puck into the crowd and was sent off the ice with a game misconduct. This gave Geneseo a huge opportunity with a lengthy 5-on-3 chance. Chris Kestell took advantage and scored his second of the year for Geneseo and tied it up at three.

Mike MacDonald was apparently tired of having a close game at this point as he took over the rest of the way for Geneseo. MacDonald scored fourteen seconds after Kestell on a beautiful pass from Mitch Stephens and easily put one past Collichio as Neumann was still trying to kill off the 5-on-3 penalty.

MacDonald finished it off by scoring unassisted four minutes later as he skated around two Neumann defenders, faked a pass to Stephens out in front and roofed it on Collichio to put the final score at 5-3 and sealing the win for Geneseo.

It was a great weekend of hockey as both games had a lot on the line for such an early season game. Both wanted to solidify their belonging as one of the top fifteen teams in the country and from this the fans got to see a weekend of hard fought hockey games. Geneseo comes out of the weekend with a record of 2-1 and Neumann returns home with a record of 3-1. Both teams begin league play next weekend with Neumann traveling to Lebanon Valley for a set of games and Geneseo hosting Cortland on Friday night and Oswego on Saturday night. Both of Geneseo’s games are at 7 PM.

Ice Knights Preview 10/27-28

By Chris Morens

Two or three years ago this would not have been a match-up that captured anyone’s attention in the D-III hockey world. But, now that Geneseo has captured two straight SUNYAC titles and with Neumann almost making the playoffs last year, this two game series is going to be tough, competitive certainly crowd pleasing.

Neumann comes into town after rolling over Potsdam last weekend with 6-2 and 6-3 victories at Maxcy Hall. The duo of Neil Trimm and Kyle Casey each racked up 8 points over the two game set with the Bears, Trimm with 1 goal and 7 assists, Casey with a more balanced 4 goals and 4 assists. The Ice Knights will need to become familiar with this pair as Trimm assisted all 4 of Casey’s goals.

The Ice Knights started off their season a little rusty as they eventually knocked of SUNYAC hopeful Morrisville on Friday night 5-3 and then soundly defeated St. Clair College 7-4 the following afternoon. The biggest question was goaltending. Neither Junior Derek Jokic nor Sophomore Jeff Pasemko played their best but they both earned a win which at the end of the day is all that matters. The key for this week will be rebound control. Geneseo can’t give their opponents too many second chances.

That leads up to this weekend where the Knights play the Ice Knights in a broadcaster’s nightmare of a series regarding team mascots. On a more serious note, this series will be summed up in one phrase: no, not goaltending…work ethic. Neumann rarely gets outworked and that motivated style of play wins them games that they may not have thought possible based on their talent alone. This Neumann team is dangerous and could sneak out of Geneseo with at least one victory this weekend if the Ice Knights don’t get off to a strong start.

Of course goaltending will be crucial as well; Mike Collichio is always strong between the pipes for Neumann. Just two years ago he spoiled Geneseo’s opening weekend. After dropping a 5-1 decision on opening night, he put up the walls and kept his team in a 1-1 tie that left the Ice Knights rather frustrated. That could easily happen again.

The one area Geneseo needs to work on is team discipline. Eight of Neumann’s twelve goals last weekend against the Bears were on the power play. While Geneseo’s penalty killing is always dangerous, scoring four shorthanded goals the opening weekend, it needs work as it let in six goals of the eight that Geneseo surrendered against Morrisville and St. Clair. If the Ice Knights stay out of the penalty box and keep their offense reeling, they could sweep the weekend. The problem is that this is a big “if” and Neumann barely lost last year to Geneseo, dropping 3-2 and 2-1 decisions in Pennsylvania that could have gone either way. I’m sure the returning players will have nothing but revenge in mind.

Of course this is just my opinion and the real events will happen tomorrow and Saturday nights. D-III fans, you may be excited for Oswego and Elmira but this is another SUNYAC vs. ECAC-West battle that should not be overlooked. I heard the Ira might be serving waffles this weekend. I can only hope. Nothing beats quality college hockey with a delicious breakfast treat.

Chad Johnson

Thursday is a slow day here at the WGSU Sports Blog, so I thought I'd point out this piece on Chad Johnson.

Bengals receiver Chad Johnson said that if Falcons cornerback DeAngelo Hall -- "DeAngelo Fall," according to Johnson -- gets the best of him and Atlanta wins Sunday's game in Cincinnati, he will shave off his blond Mohawk.
-- Atlanta Journal-Constitution
The link includes a picture of Johnson's mohawk, which is a must see if you haven't checked it out already. Let's just say that it's very clear what team I'm rooting for this week, and they're not north of the mason-Dixon line.

Ice Knights Weekend Recap (10/20-21)

By: Nate Lull

The Geneseo Ice Knights started off their 2006-2007 campaign with two home victories last Friday and Saturday at the Ira S. Wilson Ice Arena. This was no small feat considering what Geneseo went through this past off season.

After winning their second straight SUNYAC Championship last March, the Ice Knights not only lost a talented group of seniors to graduation, they also lost first-year head coach and Geneseo alum, Jason Lammers. During the summer months Lammers decided to take an offer for an assistant coaching position with the Division I Ohio State Buckeyes hockey program. Having to act fast, Geneseo brought in another alum in Chris Schultz, who played with Lammers in his days as an Ice Knight and graduated from Geneseo in 1997.

Schultz had been coaching in Rochester, NY at the Aquinas Institute. There he compiled a very successful coaching record of 54-14-3 over the past three seasons. Schultz was also an assistant for the Ice Knights from 2000-2003.

Many have questioned how the team will fare this season. Few picked them to win a second straight SUNYAC championship last season when they entered the year with a new head coach; and the same is true this year. This season the Ice Knights will once again have to skate hard and win games in order to gain respect in the tough SUNYAC conference – they started their journey this past weekend by winning their first two games.

On Friday the Ice Knights hosted the Morrisville Mustangs – a team that is making the move from junior college hockey to the Division III ranks. They will be fazed into the SUNYAC conference over the next few seasons. The Mustangs were very successful at the junior college level, winning the last three national championships. The Mustangs banked on this experience and for one period had Geneseo right where they wanted them. Goals by Evan Kernohan and Geneseo native Patrick Morss had Morrisville up 2-0 after one period of play. Kernohan’s goal came on the power play after an early Ice Knight penalty. Morss’ goal was an impressive long-range shot that snuck over the left shoulder of Ice Knight Goaltender Derek Jokic and into the top corner of the net to put the Mustangs up 2-0.

Geneseo regrouped after the first period and came out firing in the second. Sophomore Defensivemen Chris Kestell scored the first goal of the season for the Ice Knights as he was assisted by Casey Balog and Mark Schwamberger on the power play. The Mustangs lead was gone under a minute later when Geneseo Senior and Assistant Captain Mitch Stephens scored a highlight-reel goal. Stephens made a swift move around one defender on the left wing side of the Morrisville goal. The defender had no other option then to body up on Stephens as he went around him. Stephens was tripped up, but this didn’t seem to bother him as Stephens fell to his knees; he slid for a moment then lifted the puck with his stick over the shoulder of Morrisville goaltender Travis Moore and into the upper right-hand corner of the goal. This tied the game up at 2 and this is how the period would end.

The third period brought out the offensive firepower for the Ice Knights. Stephens struck again for Geneseo less than a minute into the final period by scoring a short handed goal with an assistant from Senior Tyson Terry. This put Geneseo up 3-2. It was Stephens’ first short-handed goal of the season. He led the Division-III hockey nation in short-handed goals last year.

Morrisville wasn’t quite ready to go away though as Tyler Fulton found the back of the net only thirty seconds after Stephens' second goal. This tied the game up at 3-3 and it appeared that the Mustangs weren’t going down without a fight.

Geneseo needed to respond and they did when Junior Mathieu Cyr scored the game winner with 17:50 to go. Cyr was assisted by his freshmen linemates, Dan Brown and Sebastian Panetta. Cyr used his speed to get Moore off-balance and was able to backhand a beauty through the five-hole to seal up the win.

First-year Phil Rose from Pittsford, NY finished up the scoring for Geneseo as he netted his first goal of his college career on the power play mid-way through the period. This finished up the game with Geneseo coming back from being down 2-0 in the first period to defeat Morrisville 5-3.

Geneseo defeats St. Clair, 7-4.

After defeating Morrisville on Friday night, Geneseo had to make a quick turn around and host an afternoon game against the St. Clair Saints from Windsor, Ontario, Canada on Saturday. This game did not count on the record for the Ice Knights and was considered an exhibition game.

Coach Schultz decided to mix things up in net and start Sophomore Jeff Pasemko between the pipes. The move worked as Pasemko looked strong and the offense of the Ice Knights came out in full force to defeat St. Clair 7-4.

Geneseo received goals from Brandon French, Tyson Terry, Ram Sidhu, Dan Brown, and Mitch Stephens. Stephens scored another short-handed goal on a beautiful break away on a pass from Steve Sankey. Freshmen Forward Sebastian Panetta scored two goals and really sparked the Ice Knight attack. The line of Brown, Mathieu Cyr, and Panetta is one that has a lot of speed and could pose problems for Geneseo’s opponents all year.

Sophomore Brandon French opened the scoring in the first period with a break away goal against Saints goaltender T.J. Aceti and continued his stellar play when he assisted on the second period goal of Tyson Terry.

“We need to pepper the goalie with shots” French said after the first period. “He is a good goalie and we need to just keep plugging away on him.”

French and the Ice Knights did just that as they scored five second period goals and frustrated Aceti all afternoon. The Ice Knight defense also looked stellar on Saturday as Senior Captain Steve Jordan led the way. Geneseo kept St. Clair standouts Kyle Lang and Jim Lebarron in check throughout the game.

Jordan leads a talented group of defensivemen for the Ice Knights this year. This includes Junior Captain Steve Sankey, Senior Tyson Terry, Sophomore Chris Kestell, Senior Mike Morris, Sophomore Sean Hayden and strong newcomers in Andrew Rebus, Jeff MacPhee, and Dave Schroeder. This group should be a strong point for Geneseo this year and they certainly looked this way last Saturday.

After battling with the Saints for one more period, Geneseo came away with a 7-4 victory over St. Clair. An impressive win over a team that had already played six games so far this season, including two games against Division I opponents.

Overall, it was a good opening weekend for the Geneseo Ice Knights. They got two wins that they needed to open the season. First year Head Coach Chris Schultz got his first two wins behind the bench for Geneseo and he will look to continue this success next weekend when Geneseo hosts non-conference foe Neumann College from Pennsylvania. Both games are at 7 PM on Friday and Saturday night.

SUNYAC Hockey Power Rankings

SUNYAC Power Rankings by Josh Carey
Send hate mail to wgsusports@geneseo.edu

We all know records don’t tell the whole story, but the SUNYAC Power Rankings do. Teams are rated based on past performance and future expectations. The ratings are constructed such that any two teams playing at a neutral site, with a neutral crowd, equidistant from the two campuses, would have the higher seeded team beat the lower seeded team.

Rank (Last week rank) Team (Record;Conference Record). Last week (Score)
Analysis
This week.

1 (LW: NR). Oswego (2-0). Last week: W @ Morrisville (9-1), W vs. Utica (4-3).

The Lakers put up the best effort of any team against a Mustangs team that will compete against many teams in the SUNYAC this season if other performances are any indication. Combine that with a strong effort against an ECAC-West foe and you get Oswego at the top of the rankings to start the season. Letting Utica back into a game the Lakers had firmly in hand is a point of concern, as are the 10 penalties. However, the Pioneers also spent 24 minutes in the box, and tough officiating seems to be a storyline to open this season. Don’t get too excited about that victory over Morrisville, however, as it seems coach Earl Utter realized Cody Williams came back from Cortland for a reason. A huge home-and-home this week will likely determine if the Lakers can hold on to this spot.

This week: @ Elmira, vs.Elmira

2 (LW: NR). Geneseo (1-0). Last week: W vs. Morrisville (5-3), W vs. St Clair (7-4, ex).

The Ice Knights started out sloppy at home against Morrisville, trailing 2-0 after one period. They quickly turned it around, putting 56 shots on goal in that matchup. Too many penalties marred both their games this weekend, and seven goals against each weekend won’t cut it in the SUNYAC. However, three shorthanded goals in the exhibition prove something’s going right (his name is Mitch Stephens) and puts them in the 2 slot.

This week: vs. Neumann, vs. Neumann.

3 (LW: NR). Plattsburgh (1-0): Last week: W vs. Morrisville (6-3).

Why are the Cardinals behind an Ice Knight team with the same record who beat the Mustangs by one less goal? First, the Ice Knights also put up a solid game against the Saints, plus two of the Cardinals’ goals against Morrisville came in the last 90 seconds of the game, by which point the Mustangs were likely reeling from two tough opponents and two consecutive nights on the road. It might have been a concern for the Cardinals that they only played one game before opening league play early against Potsdam, but the Bears are reeling.

This week: at Potsdam (conference game), vs. US Under-18 team (Sun, exhibition).

4 (LW: NR). Cortland (2-0). Last week: W @ Brockport (3-0), W vs. Fredonia (2-1, neutral site).

I hesitate to put Cortland this high, despite their two wins and only one goal against (can that be right?). They are, after all, still the Red Dragons. However, you can’t ignore the play of freshman goaltender Ben Binga facing 37 shots in his first D3 action and stopping all of them. Follow that up with a one goal effort against the Blue Devils and Cortland might have something special between the pipes. They get credit for these wins being against SUNYAC opponents, but be on watch Red Dragons, slip at the Giant Center and your position in the rankings will drop accordingly. This week: @ Lebanon Valley.

5 (LW: NR). Brockport (1-1). Last week: L vs. Cortland (3-0), W vs. Buffalo St (5-3).

This is a team that I am completely confused about right now, which is pretty much the only reason they get this ranking. They lose to a Cortland team that I also can’t figure out, and beat a Buffalo State team that had a dreadful weekend, and do it with a late third period rally. Is that really a fair analysis? No, but it’ll have to do. It’s not so much that the Golden Eagles deserve this spot, but more that I don’t think anyone else does. Expect to see somebody else here after next week.

This week: @ Manhattanville, @ Manhattanville.

6 (LW: NR). Fredonia (1-1). Last week: W vs. Buffalo St (5-4, neutral site), L vs. Cortland (2-1, neutral site).

This is a Fredonia team I expressed concern about on the SUNYAC Spotlight Preseason Special, and it seems like I was right. They were able to put 46 shots on Cortland, but only able to convert on 1 of 11 power play chances. The win against Buffalo State is similarly unimpressive considering the Bengals held out seven players for being late to a meeting, including goalie Sheehan, and forwards Hill and DeMarco. The Blue Devils lucked out, and having only three freshmen goalies on the roster for the first half of this season will not bode well for their chances in league play. Oh, and look who’s coming to town this week…

This week: vs. Marian, vs. St. Norbert.

7 (LW: NR). Buffalo St. (0-2). Last week: L vs. Fredonia (5-4, neutral site), L @ Brockport (5-3).

I already touched on the suspensions of seven players for the Friday night loss against the Blue Devils, and I think the Bengals would have had a completely different weekend if those players showed up on time. As it is, Buffalo State was forced to put out a second rate team that lost to Fredonia, and then had no team chemistry on the ice Saturday, especially when it came down to crunch time and they melted. They gave the Golden Eagles numerous chances on the power play, which cost them a game they had been in control of up to that point. A week of practice should get the team back on the same page, but it might not matter this week.

This week: vs. St. Norbert, vs. Marian.

8 (LW: NR). Potsdam (0-2). Last week: L vs. Neumann (6-2), L vs. Neumann (6-3, Sunday).

We knew Neumann was going to be an improved team, and that the Bears were going to feel the loss of T.J. Sakaluck, but this was a little ridiculous. Barnhardt had an underwhelming .850 save percentage on Saturday, and Cuccaro wasn’t any better on Sunday, with a .837 save percentage. The Bears were only able to generate 23 shots on goal in each game. We also start up right where we left off regarding Potsdam’s penalty kill. This team looks like a team that could compete at even strength (they outscored Neumann 2-1 at even strength on Sunday), but they gave the Knights 18 power play opportunities in the same game. I need to type that again to believe it…. 18 power play chances! And Neumann converted on 5 of those, a solid 27.8% clip. And the news only gets worse, as Ryan McCarthey was seen heading off to the locker room favoring his shoulder on Saturday and it doesn’t appear he played Sunday. Plus the Bears start out conference play a week earlier than anyone else. The cards are stacked against Potsdam early in the schedule, and they might be looking up at the rest of the league for a while.

This week: vs. Plattsburgh (conference game), @ Hobart.

9. (LW: NR). Morrisville (0-3). Last week: L vs. Oswego (9-1), L @ Geneseo (5-3), L vs. Plattsburgh (6-3).

While not yet officially a member of the SUNYAC, I’m going to include Morrisville in these rankings to gauge their progress in the SUNYAC and Division III. It was a wakeup call for the Mustangs, as they played the top 3 teams in the conference in a row. Even though they got two of those games at home, the Mustangs were generally outmatched more than these scores would suggest. They were outshot 53-11, 56-19, and 52-26. That’s 53.66 shots against per game for anyone keeping score at home (Oh, you weren’t keeping score at home? That’s why I do it for you). The Mustangs need to improve on what is just above a .800 save percentage if they want to compete at this level. That starts with the defense getting in the way of the opposition and preventing those shots from getting on net. Then the Mustangs need to work on getting control of the puck and spending some time in their offensive end. That being said, if they hang around in early season games against top teams like Geneseo and Plattsburgh (The Cardinals scored two goals in the last 90 seconds), later in the season when their conditioning improves and they’re more used to playing at this level they will be a force to be reckoned with for middle of the road teams in the conference.

This week: vs. Becker, vs. Becker.
